Session 1:
The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Linking Self-Care and Wellbeing to Impact

Nonprofit professionals work hard every day with limited resources which can result in burnout if they do not embrace self-care and the organization does not nurture a culture of well-being in the nonprofit workplace.

This session is about how and why it is important to treat self-care and well-being as an organizational strategy and cultural norm. When self-care initiatives are treated as “extras” instead of being built right into the fabric of an organization’s culture, they are nothing more than a Band-Aid, barely disguising the underlying chronic stress and eroding the nonprofits ability to meet its mission.

This session will share the latest thinking on well-being in the nonprofit workplace based on the presenter's book “The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout.”


  • Understand the basics of burnout symptoms and self-care practices that many nonprofit professionals are embracing to ensure their resilience in the face of significant challenges
  • Staff will create self-care plans
  • Facilitate design thinking workshop to pilot projects and steps to implement a “We-Care” strategy for encouraging a culture of wellbeing in the workplace

Session 2:
Technology Wellness in the Nonprofit Workplace: Work/Life Balance in An Age of 24/7 Connectivity

Email and working online blurs the boundaries between work and personal time, sometimes making it hard for staff to detach from work after business hours and creating stress through “collaborative overload.” Overuse or misuse of technology can also cause stress, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming; you can take back control.

This workshop explores both personal use of technology and organizational use and identifies how technology can cause stress and interfere with work/life balance. This workshop share personal productivity techniques, including the use of attention training and visualization, to combat distraction. It will also cover ways that staff can create boundaries between time on and time off by creating an after emails and remote working charter. The tips and tools, once you put them into practice as an individual and collaboratively in the workplace, will help you achieve more in less time and ultimately increase your focus and wellbeing.

Based on the ideas in The Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout, internationally acclaimed trainer and author Beth Kanter will lead this fun, interactive workshop where you will learn:


  • To reflect on how we use technology for work to recognize our own patterns of distraction and addiction and how to change them
  • To provide best practices and techniques for taming the digital jungle that assaults our brains every day via email, social media, and online
  • To identify ways to encourage technology wellness in our workplaces
